If like us, you have a passion for properties, a career as an estate & lettings agent may be for you. There are a range of unique qualities that we possess as people, which are key to ensuring you thrive. Read on to see if you have what it takes.
Personality
Much of our job consists of dealing with people. Estate & lettings agents meet all kinds of people, face-to-face and virtually, so good communicative skills are a must. Calm, confident, professional, polite, friendly, warm and persuasive (without being pushy) are key characteristics that can make you relatable and trustworthy to others. You’ll also need to approach each sale individually, and expect to apply a flexible approach.
Qualifications
Although this may not be necessary to kick-start your career, some clients may see highly trained professionals as more credible. Righthaus can advise you on relevant qualifications, including: CELA, NAEA and ARLA.
Job requirements
Ways of working have changed dramatically, especially over recent years, and the traditional ‘9-5’ doesn’t always apply. An estate & lettings agency needs to provide a service that works for its clients, which can mean being available outside of conventional working hours. Offices may be open up to 6 pm, with agents conducting property viewings at weekends and in the evening. There will also be different patterns of working from day to day, splitting your time between your desk and being out in the field. As you’ll need to travel to and from properties, driving is essential.
Motivation
Progressing your career will be based on how well you perform. An agent who is committed and puts in the effort will often reap the rewards, not just in terms of their salary (which may include commission), but also in climbing the ladder.
